Forensic document examination is the scientific study and analysis by the document examiner of examining questioned documents and handwriting to determine authenticity for legal purposes.
A document is any material that contains marks, symbols or signs.
A document may be on paper, a wall, a sidewalk, on a bottle or any other surface on which the marks were made. It may be created by hand or electronically with a printer, fax machine or other mechanical device. A document may also be created with a computer. This web page is a document.
What is the origin of a document?
Who wrote a document? (signature verification)
Is it a forged signature? (Unless the document examiner is also a lawyer the opinion can only say that the purported writer did not write the signature rather than a forgery.)
Is it an altered document?
Is the document an original document?
What was originally on an obliterated document?
Forensic handwriting examination is the scientific study of a questioned document for legal purposes by the document examiner to determine whether a suspected writer either wrote or did not write the questioned document. Forensic handwriting examination is used to resolve disputes as to the writer of wills, contracts, deeds, checks and many other forms of written documents.
